SHGs of Rural Development Department manufactures 32,000 masks to mitigate the demand

The state government under the able leadership of Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur is successfully striving towards making Himachal Pradesh corona virus free state of the country. In the wake of COVID-19 the need and demand of face masks had increased drastically and to cater this demand 46 self-help groups (SHGs) of Rural Development Department have been trained and engaged to manufacture the masks.

The government had sanctioned Rs. 50,000  to Himachal Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (HPSRLM) as COVID-19 disaster fund to manufacture the masks. These Self Help Groups have manufactured about 32,000 three layer masks of non-woven cloth in the last one week along with the majority of pieces have been sold to Rural Local Bodies, police department, IPH department and other department across the districts. The groups are utilizing the revolving fund, community Investment given to them for making the masks. Under this mission the department has also trained around 500 women as reserve force in tehsil Pacchad of district Sirmaur. 

Apart from masks the department is also initiating its efforts in preparing PPE kits for which three self help groups have been trained. These self help groups are Shraddha group Sarahan, Balaji group Sarahan, Pooja group Sarahan in district Shimla. About 100 kits a day will be prepared by these groups which will cost about Rs.700 each.  The department has also prepared sanitizers with the help of Akal self help group in Badu Sahib which is available in market for Rs. 100 per 250 ml.

The department has also supported group members to procure raw materials required for the making of masks. While making these masks it has been ensured that SHG members follow social distancing norms strictly, while covering their face, wash their hands properly and sanitize their equipment to maintain proper hygiene
