The 133 Eco Task Force, constituted by the Government of Himachal Pradesh for environmental protection, is playing a significant role in upholding environmental responsibilities along with promoting humanitarian values. Over the past 19 years, the Eco Task Force has made remarkable contributions in the fields of environmental conservation, afforestation, and disaster management.
Col. Deepak Kumar, Commanding Officer of the 133 Eco Task Force, said that based on a unique concept, the force engages ex-servicemen, re-inducting them into service as part of a small Army Corps Group, and assigning them important responsibilities related to environmental protection. Since its establishment, the 133 Eco Task Force has planted over 6.076 million saplings across Himachal Pradesh. Apart from afforestation efforts covering 5,675 hectares, the force has established 11 nurseries with a total capacity of 430,000 plants. Furthermore, it has successfully rejuvenated three Amrit Sarovars and several ponds.
He said that in last five years, the Eco Task Force has effectively controlled 43 forest fire incidents and strengthened fire prevention by establishing fire lines in 42 project areas. Additionally, the force has constructed 11 check dams using locally available materials to aid in water conservation.
Special plantation drives are regularly organized by the Eco Task Force during important occasions such as Van Mahotsav, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, Meri Maati Mera Desh, Swachhata Hi Seva, and International Yoga Day, among others. Alongside plantation efforts, the force conducts ongoing activities focused on soil conservation, protection of flora and fauna, and water resource preservation.
Moreover, the Eco Task Force plays a crucial role in providing shelter, food, and transportation to affected people during natural disasters, further strengthening its commitment to both environmental and humanitarian service.
